A strange silence crept over the Cameroon jungle, its eerie whisper drawing Tarzan from a light slumber. The nights were never this silent. Primal instinct warned him that something was coming, that same instinct told him that it was his duty to protect the troop now that Kerchak was gone. The loss still weighed heavily on his heart; a pain increased by the responsibility that had been left to him and the footprints he needed to fill. Glancing down at Jane asleep beside him in the large grassy nest, he carefully brushed the hair from her face. The soft smile that spread over her face warmed him. What they shared, not only the love for one another, but for this jungle as well, filled him with a feeling he had yet to learn a name for. Before her, life had been much simpler, he had been different from his family, a part of it, but still a creature unlike anything else in the jungle.
